LATEST NEWS:

The Commission has identified the significant number of drug deaths in Dundee as its first and most pressing priority. With this in mind, the Commission is keen to engage with as wide an audience as possible to understand why Dundee is facing these challenges and to identify better solutions. The Commission is also aware that these issues are not confined to Dundee, and that lessons can be learned which could be applied across Scotland (and beyond).

As part of the evidence gathering phase of the Commission, a survey was created and disseminated across Dundee and beyond (via hard copies, a weblink and via social media). The survey consisted of demographic questions and one key open-ended question:

What has to be done in Dundee (and across Scotland/elsewhere) to radically reduce the increasing numbers of drug-related deaths? A total of 927 responses have been included in the summary analysis which can be downloaded via the following link: Evidence Paper, Survey Initial Analysis

PURPOSE OF THE COMMISSION

Dundee, like most cities, has problems with drug misuse which impact on many of our communities. This is a complex and serious issue and the Council, NHS Tayside and all our partners in the city are determined to take action to address it.

The Dundee Partnership has asked Figure 8 Consultancy to set up and facilitate an independent commission. The commission is tasked with investigating these issues, scrutinising local services and making recommendations on how, as a city and a community planning partnership, can address this and turn outcomes around.

This is being supported by local and national politicians and local service commissioners and managers. So, there will be the right climate to ask the hard questions and introduce meaningful change. Its independence will enable it to be rigorous and challenging whilst also acknowledging the challenges faced by local services.
